Luna Bars FAQ

Product Basics

Why a new recipe? What’s different?

As always, LUNA is an excellent source of nutrients important to women’s health and nutrition such as calcium, folic acid, and iron. In our careful review of what women eat daily in comparison to the Recommended Daily Allowances (RDA), we slightly rebalanced our vitamin and mineral blend to more closely reflect women’s current eating habits. New to LUNA is the addition of Vitamin D – an increasingly common deficiency among women – to help support calcium absorption for bone health. We have also slightly reduced the levels of certain vitamins and minerals that women are now commonly getting elsewhere in their daily diets, such as B vitamins, copper, magnesium, and biotin.

Why create a bar only for women?

LUNA® bar was created to help women get more of the nutrients often lacking in their meal plans while being 100% natural and as organic as possible. That’s why LUNA bar contains ingredients, like calcium, folic acid, iron, vitamin D, soy protein, and other vitamins and minerals essential to a woman’s everyday nutritional needs. As women ourselves, we understand the importance of maintaining overall health and wellness.

Nutritional Info

Has LUNA bar’s nutritional profile changed?

The core nutritional profile of LUNA bar has not changed. Each 1.69 oz (48g) LUNA Bar has around 170-190 calories with 8-9g protein and 3-5g fiber. It is also low glycemic, high in calcium and folic acid, and rich in antioxidants (Vitamins A, C and E). Each bar has 3.5-7g fat and 11-13g sugar depending on the flavor.

Is LUNA bar a meal replacement bar?

LUNA bar is not a meal replacement bar. We realize women are busy and active, and some days, mealtime just gets away from us. On those days when LUNA bar is your best alternative to skipping a meal, try to follow it up with something light, like yogurt and a piece of fruit.

Is LUNA bar low-GI?

LUNA bar is considered a “low glycemic” food due to its balance of carbohydrate, fat, protein, fiber, and portion size. Glycemic Index (GI) can be a great tool for fine-tuning the carbohydrate choices in your meal plan, but it shouldn’t be your exclusive consideration for whether or not to include certain foods in your daily meal plans.

Is LUNA bar a diet bar? How does it fit into Weight Watchers?

LUNA bar is not a diet bar. LUNA bar is an organic nutrition bar which provides the nutrition women need to maintain active, healthy lifestyles. It is a delicious, nutritious and convenient snack that satisfies and curbs hunger between meals, helping to prevent high calorie/high fat snack cravings such as potato chips or candy bars. All LUNA bar flavors, with the exception of White Chocolate Macadamia, contain 3 points on the Weight Watcher meal planning system; LUNA White Chocolate Macadamia is 4 points.

Can men eat LUNA bars too?

Men too can enjoy LUNA bars! There is nothing in a LUNA bar that is not good for men. However, LUNA bars are specifically formulated to provide women with the nutrients that are often harder for them to get.

Can kids eat LUNA bars?

Because the bar is formulated with adult needs in mind, children should not eat a whole bar until their nutritional needs more closely match those of an adult (around ages 9-13). Children ages 4-9 could have one on occasion and as with all food choices, parents should use their best judgment.

An option for children is try out another bar we offer called ZBar. It is uniquely designed for the nutritional needs of growing, active children and tastes great.

Why does Berry Almond LUNA Bar have less vitamins and minerals than other LUNA Bars?

We created this bar specifically in honor of the Breast Cancer Fund. Because women undergoing chemotherapy and radiation are often told to limit/reduce their intake of vitamin supplements, we decided to not fortify the bar. With the exception of calcium, all vitamins and minerals are strictly from the ingredients in the bar. In addition, since we know they are sources of powerful antioxidants, we loaded the bar with red berries, blueberries and almonds.

Ingredient Info

What does 70% organic mean? What’s the other 30%?

For a product to be labeled as “70% organic” it must contain at least 70% USDA certified organic ingredients. These are ingredients that have been produced, stored, processed and handled in accordance with the National Organic Program (NOP) standards and approved by an organic-certifying agency. The other 30% ingredients are “organic-compliant” and are also held to high standards as defined by the NOP. These ingredients must not contain prohibited substances such as genetically modified substances (GMO).

Do you use artificial sweeteners or other artificial ingredients?

LUNA bars are100% natural and contain no artificial sweeteners, flavors, or colors. LUNA bars are sweetened with organic brown rice syrup and organic evaporated cane juice.

Do LUNA bars contain genetically modified or bioengineered ingredients?

No, our bars contain no genetically modified or bioengineered ingredients.

Do LUNA bars contain Trans Fats?

Do LUNA bars contain dairy?

We specify to our suppliers and bakers that ingredients going into our LUNA bars do not contain dairy. The food manufacturing process however, is such that we cannot guarantee that trace amounts of dairy will never turn up in our products even for products as natural and wholesome as ours.

Are there any animal products in LUNA bars?

LUNA bars do not contain animal products or ingredients sourced from animal products.

Why do LUNA bars contain soy protein?

We choose to use soy because it is a complete source of protein, and is also vegetarian. It contributes to the balance of nutrients in LUNA bars—the balance of carbohydrate, protein, fat, and fiber that lead to a low glycemic response. LUNA bars contain 8-9 grams of soy protein. In the 8-9 grams of soy protein coming from a LUNA bar there are 9-16 milligrams of naturally occurring soy isoflavones, the phytonutrient of soy beans.

If I am allergic to nuts, can I eat a LUNA bar?

If you’re allergic to any nut or seed you should not eat LUNA bars. The bars are made on the same machinery as flavors containing nuts and seeds, and even with very strict cleaning procedures, we’re unable to remove all nut/seed residue.

What is the source of fiber in LUNA bars?

The main source of fiber in LUNA bars is inulin—a fiber which comes from the root of chicory plants (leaves of the chicory plant are also known as endive, commonly used in salads). Inulin is the most nutritious form of fiber because it is a soluble fiber which can help reduce cholesterol and it is a prebiotic aiding in good intestinal health. Additional fiber sources in LUNA bars include rolled oats, flaxseed, nuts, and dried fruit.
